How to Support Your Loved Ones During a Pandemic

JUMP AHEAD

During these difficult times much is uncertain and so many questions are being asked with very little answers. One question that you may be asking is “How do you go from visiting your friends and loved ones daily /weekly to now not being able to see them for months at a time?” “How do I help my loved one cope during this time if I am unable to see them?” This is a difficult challenge for everyone involved. We as humans benefit from physical and emotional communication. So how are you able to support in other ways during this sensitive time?

Utilize the Mail: Use the mail as a source of communication by sending letters, post cards, photos, and care packages.

Get Involved: Let your loved ones know that you are thinking of them by checking the social media page of your assisted living facility and leaving comments.

Care Package: Have flowers, a fruit basket, or care package delivered to the facility or you could drop it off yourself. Personalize your gesture by having a homemade card or poster made by you and/or a grandchild to show your love.

Phone a Friend/Loved One: Call your loved one to let them know that you are thinking of them and ask them about their day. Utilize technology with sending a text, a phone call, or even video chat.

Why are care packages important?

The Pandemic can have one feeling lost or disconnected to the outside world and the ones they are familiar with. A small gesture can go a very long way, especially with someone feeling down or lonely. Receiving a care package is a sure way to lift one’s spirits! It sends a significant message that someone is thinking of you and that you are loved.

Thinking of sending a care package but not sure what to include? Think about your friend or loved one and what they enjoy doing. What are their hobbies? What could brighten their day? What can keep them busy?

When building your care package consider putting in the following:

    • Crossword puzzles
    • Puzzles/games
    • Knitting Items
    • Books/ Magazines
    • Fun Decorative Masks
    • Hand Sanitizer/Lotion
    • Photos
    • Favorite Snacks or Treats
    • Stuffed Animals
    • Blankets/Slippers
    • Art Supplies

During the Pandemic everyone is learning how to navigate through the new “normal” of what society has become. Fortunately, there is no new “normal” when it comes to communication and showing support for one another. As you may know communication is extremely beneficial for our psychological needs. Showing support thorough communication helps decrease depression, strengthens your mental health through social bonding, boosting your confidence and self-esteem.

Hopefully, knowing this will serve as a reminder to all of us to make an extra effort to show support and make those connections with loved ones and relatives.
